BCU professor to shape the future of Artificial Intelligence

A BCU Associate Professor will be instrumental in setting the benchmarks for Artificial Intelligence (AI) standards as part of the BridgeAI Standards Working Group (BAI-SWG).听

Dr Vahid Javidroozi, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering, and the Built Environment, will contribute his significant expertise in systems thinking and integration, creating standard frameworks in Smart, Sustainable, and Green (SSG) cities, and his experience in the use of AI and Large Language Models for supply chain management and SSG cities.听

鈥淚鈥檓 honoured to join the group and influence the future of AI standards,鈥 said Dr Javidroozi, who co-leads the听SSG research thematic area at BCU.听

鈥淭he BAI-SWG is essential to developing a robust framework that fosters innovation while promoting the ethical, responsible, and sustainable advancement of AI technologies.听

鈥淏y aligning industry needs with technical advancements, the group helps to create a sustainable and responsible AI landscape that benefits society as a whole.听

鈥淏y understanding what Bridge AI aims to achieve and shaping funding calls, I鈥檒l also be well placed to support BCU colleagues to craft research proposals that meet these needs.鈥澨

Professor Hanifa Shah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of BCU's Faculty of CEBE, said: 鈥淭his appointment underscores Dr Javidroozi's dedication to fostering a trustworthy, ethical, and innovative AI landscape. The BAI-SWG鈥檚 mission is to establish best practice standards for the development, deployment, and governance of AI technologies, to ensure they are safe, ethical, and effective.听听

The benchmarks will be important for industries with significant AI integration, including healthcare, finance, transport, smart cities, supply chain management, and manufacturing.听听

They will apply to technology developers, policymakers, and organisations implementing AI solutions, ensuring a unified approach to AI ethics and performance.听

Dr Javidroozi will play a crucial role in developing AI standards by:

  1. Providing strategic insights on the priorities for AI standards and highlighting opportunities for UK leadership in this area,听
  2. Addressing market demands and tackling technical challenges across various sectors,
  3. Reviewing standards proposals to ensure they align with industry needs and the latest AI advancements,听
  4. Building relationships across industry, government, and academia, to encourage participation in the development of AI standards,
  5. Monitoring global trends and recommending collaborations that benefit BridgeAI.听
