Sustainable design thinking: A case study on improvement of tertiary packaging
The current design strategy of three-tier packaging is very effective in terms of protection and cost-effectiveness, and there is nothing wrong with protecting goods as well as saving costs for the stakeholders. However, as a carrier, tertiary packaging takes on part of a product's life cycle, and in the trend towards sustainability, tertiary packaging is not always mentioned by the general public.
DT (design thinking) is a popular and practical creative problem-solving tool, it does not explicitly consider sustainability. This feature can lead to unsustainable design solutions, and the DT-compatible nature has led many academics to think about and develop DT methods that can help implement the principles inherent in sustainable development. SDT was thus born, and the sustainability-oriented insert developed and tested by Hila S (2017) serves as a complementary DT process to achieve sustainability.
The process is to integrate SSD (Strategic Sustainability) into the DT process, ensuring that sustainability is considered in every aspect. The research explores what impact SDT can have on the design strategy during the design phase of tertiary packaging, resulting in an increase in the sustainability performance of tertiary packaging in logistics.
