Developing a blue-green urban planning framework towards the Integration of Flood Risk Management in United Kingdom
Flooding is one of the Earth's most damaging climate-related hazard. There are only a few countries in the world where citizens and government do not need to bother about flooding. A 2007 report by the (OECD) showed that every year, flooding claims about 20,000 lives as well as displaces over 75 million people and destroying $3 Million worth of properties.
Flooding has had devastating impact on both homes and businesses in affected areas. Whilst the economic effect can be considerable, the impact on the lives and wellbeing of people affected both in the immediate aftermath and the longer-term consequences have been a source of significant stress and worry in communities affected by flooding. In situations like this, there is a need to have an effective FRM system on ground to be adequately prepared when there are warnings of disaster.
The blue-green urban planning framework can be one of those solutions, as it provides a proven, sustainable, underpinning of development that protects against floods and offers a range of other benefits with no down sides.
